But what would emerge triumphant from the depths of such profound darkness was a community of family, friends, and strangers far more steeped in love, hope, and kindness than they could ever possibly fathom. Destruction in communities and businesses was both total and personal, as Owen Grimenstein lost his home, most of his possessions, and very nearly, his own life. This memoir is the true, first-hand account of one man's survival during the Nashville floods of 2010, as entire neighborhoods were submerged, streets ran like rapids, and lives were lost. Poverty on the other hand is a concept that refers to "pronounced deprivation in well being." (1) In simple terms, to be poor is to be hungry, homeless, sick, illiterate, voiceless, powerless and generally unprotected from adverse and potentially oppressive and unjust social realities. It decisively contributes to people’s assumption of self-worth. It evokes difficult to disengage attitudes of prosperity, power, social status, security and personal success. Wealth and poverty are elements of social stratification that substantively contribute to people's definition and experience of "good life." Wealth is a multivalent concept loaded with multiple ideological complex meanings. One might easily take “The Banished Immortal,” his first work of nonfiction, as a departure from his previous work. Jin, a National Book Award-winning writer, is most known for his fiction, which is largely set in China during the Cultural Revolution and in Chinese immigrant communities in the U.S. In “ The Banished Immortal,” a biography of Li, the novelist Ha Jin narrates the poet’s unusual life with erudition and empathy. In the centuries since, Li’s verse, by turns playful and profound, has made him China’s most beloved poet. In his biography of Li Bai, the novelist Ha Jin narrates the banished poet’s unusual life, which, in some ways, mirrors the biographer’s. And we are blind compared to the animals that can see in infrared, or ultraviolet, or with 360-degree vision. We are blind in comparison to the x-rays that peer through skin, the mass spectrometers that detect the dead inside the living, or the high-tech surveillance systems that see with artificial intelligence. this vitally important new book gives voice to the sense weve all had.
